Exploring The Plumbing Trap: P & S Traps – Through The Wall or Floor, Respectively

The P trap is an ingenious device that blocks sewer gas from entering your home

A plumbing trap is a simple but ingenious contraption used essentially to block the less-than-pleasant smell from drifting up various drain-holes located around your house. If you take the letter P and rotate it 90 degrees clockwise and remove the line segment between the U shape, you’ll get the general shape of the P trap. Now imagine piping extended from each end of the P, with the one pointing up going to a given sink drain, and the horizontal one exiting through the wall and into the sewer.  If the piping extends vertically from the trap and exits through the floor, then the configuration is referred to as an S trap.

“If something isn’t blocking the sewer gases from wafting up say, your face-washing sink, you will be nauseated by the horrendous smell, the next time you decide to lean over your sink and wash your face,” says Bob Beall.

This is where what is called the P or S traps come into the picture to save the day. As you run water down your sink, the water will first accumulate in the trap before overflowing and continuing down the pipe. Now even when you stop the water, what has accumulated in the trap will stay “trapped” and just sit there obediently. According to Beall, this trapped water acts as the barrier between your face and the horrendous smells that would otherwise overwhelm you.”

If you have a plumbing emergency you can contact any of the offices and a plumbing expert will be immediately dispatched to your residential or commercial property for a reliable and cost efficient resolution.  “I want the general public to know that there is still a conscientious plumber in the area that offers a free second opinion in the event that they have had an unfavorable experience with another plumber,” says Beall.  According to Mr. Rooter: “Not every plumbing need, needs a plumber.”
